This course is structured to assist students sitting for the "WA Shotfirer’s Permit". On this page you will find information on; course details, selection criteria, course synopsis, and what's included in the course.

Course Details

•  Duration - 5 days.

•  Location (Theory) - The Underwater Centre Fremantle.
    (Practical) - Perth environs to be nominated.

•  Minimum Number - 6.

•  Maximum Number - 12.

•  Price - AUD$1500.00.

•  
Deposit - An AUD$225.00 deposit is required to confirm a position on this course.

•  Inclusions - Price includes text books, all equipment required for the     duration of course and all certification fees.

If a student fails to pay all specified outstanding Course fees to TUCF by the due date (30 days prior to Course commencement), the Student will forfeit all monies paid, along with their place on the Course. If a student is experiencing difficulties meeting this requirement, they are to contact TUCF prior to the 30 day deadline.

Selection Criteria

•  Be at least 18 years of age

•  Hold current Department of Mines and Petroleum recognised certificate of medical
    fitness

•  Understand written and verbal communications and be able to communicate with other     persons in English

•  Possess a Dangerous Goods Security Card (Details of how to obtain this can be     
    provided on request)

•  Be able to provide Photo Identification (i.e. drivers licence or passport)

Course Synopsis

This course has been designed to prepare candidates to meet the requirements of the Department of Mines and Petroleum (Resource Safety Division) WA Shotfirers Licence. The course will provide theoretical training, along with practical blasting sessions of at least 6 hours under the strict supervision of a qualified instructor, to ensure the safe practical applications by the use of full firing warnings, voice calls and placements of shotfiring assistants.

Overview Course Overview

This course can be conducted for either Surface Operations, Underground Operations or general surface operations. The units of competency required for each operation do vary as such, so does the training provided. Training and assessment consists of both theoretical and practical components.

The surface operations course includes the Units of Competency;

•  RIIBLA205A - Store, Handle and Transport Explosives

•  RIIBLA301A - Conduct Surface Mining Operations

•  RIIBLA305A - Conduct Secondary Blasting

•  Optional Unit: RIIBLA402A - Monitor and Control the Effects of Blasting on the     
    Environment (Required for general surface operations)

The Underground Operations course includes the Units of Competency;

•  RIIBLA205A - Store, Handle and Transport Explosives

•  RIIBLA303A - Conduct Underground Development Shotfiring

•  
RIIBLA304A - Conduct Underground Production Firing

•  
RIIBLA305A - Conduct Secondary Blasting

standards Subjects Covered

Basic principles of explosives, safely handling explosives, use of explosives, responsibilities of a shotfirer, safe handling of safety fuse, electric and nonel initiation, current regulations in dealing with explosives, safety fuse, nonel tube, detonation cord and electric firing, drilling and charging operations, vibration calculations, management of fly rock, misfired charges, explosives storage, delay firing, destruction of deteriorated explosives, causes of misfire.
