Recreational Divemasters and Instructors can have their prior training
and certification accepted for access to an RPL assessment.
The table below details the number of dives and bottom time (in minutes)
required at the relevant levels to qualify for the RPL-EC course.
If
a candidate does not have sufficient times at shallower depths, excess
time from deeper dives can be attributed to times required at the shallower
depth. Experience submitted in support of the RPL must be logged dives,
with each dive signed by the student, countersigned by the dive supervisor,
and verified with the contractors stamp. The experience must be occupational
employment (not recreational dives or recreational dive instruction).
Company dive records, or computer logs dated, stamped and signed by
the employer/supervisor are also acceptable if log books records are
unavailable.
The following selection criteria will need to be met for each course;
• Hold a valid certificate of medical
fitness to dive, completed within 90 days before commencement
of the course.
• Hold a recognised certificate of
recreational diving competence (e.g. PADI Open Water Diver).
• Hold a Nationally Accredited certificate
of Senior First Aid completed within the last 12 months.
(National Competence Unit Number HLTFA301B).
• Be able to provide Photo Identification
(i.e. drivers licence or passport).
Once the candidate has proved sufficient
logged experience, they will then be required to sit a written theoretical
examination. This exam will be equivalent to the final examination of
a course at the same level as their application, i.e. applications for
a Part 2 certificate will be expected to pass the same examination and
at the same standard as a diver who is attending a Part 2 course at
TUCF.
Having passed the theory examination the candidate
will also be expected to then pass a formal assessment under an approved
Instructor. This will be a documented assessment of the divers actual
ability to use the equipment both safely and efficiently, it is not
to be considered as a general training exercise, and there is a required
level of competence to be attained. Such practical assessments cannot
be achieved in one session and several days will be required so that
a full and correct assessment can be made.
As the RPL-EC is an assessment-only process, candidates must be warned
that they accept entry to the process on the condition that are allowed
only one attempt at the assessment procedures. Please note that it is
an ADAS requirement that if a candidate fails the RPL-EC assessment
then they are required to complete a full Part 3 course to gain certification
and this process may require the candidate to complete Part 1, 2 and
3 if they hold no previously recognised qualification.
Recognition of formal training (RFT) is similar to RPL with the additional
requirement that students must have had formal training prior to being
accepted for the assessment. Formal training in Australia may have come
from sources such as the police or military. Some overseas courses will
also qualify.
Part 1, 2 and 3 RPL/RFT’s will be conducted in conjunction
with our standard course program (RPL/RFT’s piggy back onto Part
1, 2 and 3 courses).
