Immerse - Exploring the Deep
TUCF is proud to support “Immerse: Exploring the Deep”, an exhibition that will plunge you into an interactive ‘underwater world’ to explore the depths of the ocean.
TUCF are honoured to be both an exhibitor and supporter of the first interactive exhibition in Australia to showcase the amazing technology that enables humans to survive and work underwater. Since ‘hard-hat’ diving was introduced to the pearling industry in the 1860s, Western Australian has been at the forefront of subsea technological innovation when it comes to developing tools and equipment to work underwater. Discover how it is now used to go to places and do things once thought impossible.
The main focus of the exhibition is to illustrate the challenges, ingenuity and opportunities the underwater industry brings to the broader community. The centrepiece of the display is a working observation class Remotely Operated Underwater Vehicle (ROV) in a purpose-built tank and an ROV simulator.
The key themes for the exhibit are:
• Diving technology
• Underwater robots
• Acoustic technology for discovering the seafloor
• Below the Seabed: The story of oil and gas exploration and utilisation
• Sustainability and the future
• Careers in underwater technology
Underwater technology is used in a variety of fields ranging from the oil and gas industry, to investigating the flora and fauna of the world’s oceans and river systems and even to understanding maritime history through exploring shipwrecks. Immerse hopes encourage secondary and tertiary students to see the opportunities available in a career in underwater technology and engineering. It will also appeal to people interested or attached to the industry, and features a number of WA innovators in this field.

TUCF Leads the Way with Innovative eLearning Solution
TUCF
has commenced the implementation of an innovative eLearning support
program during the conduct of its current ADAS Diving Supervisor's
course. From this date forward all students undertaking diver,
supervisor and DMT courses will be issued with Apple iPads containing
an eReader and an extensive range of texts, reference books and
related materials. Students will also be provided electronic versions
of ADAS Texts and TUCF notes on thumb drives.
The iPad gives student's texts in an easy to read format. The
books are easy to navigate, in colour and are supported by the
latest IMCA documents. In addition, the iPad give students access
to the web, email, contacts, calendars and other cool features.
They are also environmentally friendly reducing the large quanity
of paper texts printed during TUCF training programs.
When asked to comment on the new iPads, Trainee Offshore Supervisor
Serge Le Goueff said, "they are fantastic, great to use and
allow me to be 70% more productive when researching relevant information".
TUCF will roll out iPads to all courses over the next two months.
Commenting on the roll out, Managing Director Ian Milliner noted,
"TUCF had been looking to use an eReader device for some
time, but small laptops and other eReaders just were not up to
the job. The iPads are the perfect tool and gives us the eLearning
solution we were looking for."

World's
first 'Offshore
Diving Supervisor Training Simulator' to be launched in Australia
Melbourne
Thursday, October 28, 2010: The
Australian Diver Accreditation Scheme (ADAS) AU$1.4M Diving Supervisor
Training Simulator Project is expected to create a world first
for the commercial diving industry by adapting existing airline
and maritime simulator concepts specifically for the diving environment.
The construction of two purpose-built offshore diving supervisor
training simulators are now complete and are due to be launched
next month at The Underwater Centre Fremantle (TUCF) in Western
Australia.
ADAS Executive Director, Paul Butler said: "The Diving
Supervisor Training Simulators offer a new approach to the way
that we undertake this critical aspect of diver management. ADAS
has for a long time believed the diving supervisor are the key
to the management of risk in diving operations and we have put
a lot of effort into developing our supervisor training concepts
over the last 10 years."

commences an ADAS Part 1 Onshore Dive Supervisor Course today
for four personnel from the Australia Federal Police. The course
is being conducted in two parts. Theory training is being conducted
in Canberra and practical training and assessment is being undertaken
at TUCF's facilities in Fremantle.
This is the second split Supervisor's course run by TUCF, with
the first being conducted for McLennans

Adelaide
Desalination Project
The Adelaide
Desalination Project has already commenced with site works
at Port Stanvac, South Australia. Key sub contractors Emergency
Risk Management Asia Pacific Pty Ltd (ERM) commenced hyperbaric
interventions this week and expect to complete tunelling in August
this year. The project has two tunnels in construction with a
tunnel boring machine (TBM) being launched from one launch shaft.
The shafts are 50 metres deep with the first tunnel extending
from the beach 1 kilometre and the second extending 1.4 kilometres
into the Spencer Gulf (off Port Stanvac).
The internal diameter of the tunnel is 2.4 metres and is a segment
machine (it builds the tunnel at the TBM) and has a very small
railway to get to and from the TBM.
Construction workers (also referred to as Compressed Air Workers)
will be working at a maximum depth of 3.5 bar (4.5 ATA) and will
use French Tunnelling Decompression Table. There will be approx
30 metres of seawater above in addition to metres of earth/rock!
To support the construction workers TUCF is supplying ERM with
three highly trained Lock Operators (ADAS Part 3 Supervisors)
who will assume the responsibility of inside attendants when Compressed
Air Workers are in the pressurised environment. Their work includes
operating the pressure locks, managing decompression and providing
emergency decompression support.
