 Diving Medical

Any student undertaking a diving course at The Underwater Centre must have an "in-date" occupational diving medical certificate. An occupational diving medical must be completed by a doctor, with appropriate training and experience in underwater medicine, within 90 days of the commencement of the course.

When making an appointment with an approved doctor please ensure you inform him/her that the medical required is an occupational diving medical in accordance with AS/NZS2299.1:2007 and AS2815 Part 1, 2 or 3. This will save confusion, as recreational diving medicals are quite different.

Occupational diving medicals are more time consuming and therefore attract a higher fee structure. You should allow a minimum of AUD$200.00 for this medical which will include an extended consultation with the doctor and may include long bone x-rays. This price is NOT included in the cost of your course.

Medicals can be obtained from, (but are not limited to) the following medical centres:

An additional list of approved doctors throughout Australia and from overseas can be supplied (see also SPUMS Doctors or HSE Doctors; Doctor who do diving medicals). A copy of the SPUMS Diving Medical can also be down loaded.

 Personal Medical Expenses

Students are responsible for their own medical expenses if they are injured or become ill for any reason during the duration of a course.

It is expected that overseas students will ensure their travel insurance covers any accident or health issue which may arise whilst in Australia. Local students must have a current Medicare card and/or relevant private health insurance.

In the event of an accident or ill health, students will be expected to contact their regular family medical practitioner. Overseas students and those students without a regular medical practitioner will be given the contact details for medical clinics within the nearby geographical area.

In the event of an emergency or diving related event, TUCF will facilitate urgent medical support through Fremantle hospital.

Dr Tony Robins - both diver and doctor!

Tony recently completed a number of commercial diving courses at The Underwater Centre Fremantle. These included the ADAS Part 1 and Part 2 Restricted, and the ADAS Chamber Operators course. Having participated on these courses Tony has a unique insight into the work occupational divers undertake.

Dr Robins is an experienced physician having seen service in the Royal Australian Navy and the Army Reserve. He recently completed a diving medicine upgrade at Royal Adelaide Hospital.
