Because of the unique nature of commercial diving courses, the way they are run may be quite different to what you have experienced in the past. Particularly for those who have undertaken recreational diving courses.

On this page we have outlined the daily program, training locations, meals provided, accommodation, transport, and personal items needed, which are generic to most of the courses conducted at The Underwater Centre Fremantle. Information on Visa applications is also included on this page.

 Daily Program

In general, with all occupational diving courses that combine the curriculum of AS2815, a six-day a week training program is undertaken. Days are generally structured in the following way:

Whilst occupational courses include some work on Saturday, and Tuesday or Thursday nights, these can be rearranged to suit the requirements of course participants. A detailed course program will be developed in consultation with students on the first day of the course.

 Training Locations

Training is conducted from three locations: Our Rous Head facilities in North Fremantle and at Waroona Dam, Logue Brook Dam, or Lake Stockton two to three hours south west of Perth. Diving operations in the Swan River, Cockburn Sound, Rottnest Island and the Port of Fremantle will depart from our Fremantle facilities.

 Meals

Training conducted in the Fremantle/Perth areas will require students to provide their own meals and accommodation. Lunch throughout the courses can be purchased from local lunch bars in the Rous Head area. A fridge and a microwave oven are available.

During diving operations at, Lake Stockton, Logue Brook or Waroona Dams, The Underwater Centre Fremantle will provide accommodation and meals. Accommodation will consist of cabins/caravans or motel rooms for one or two nights.

Students with special dietary requirements should notify the senior instructor at the commencement of training of their particular needs. (We can easily cater for all requirements including vegetarian and Halal).

 Accomodation

Accommodation requirements for courses conducted at The Underwater Centre Fremantle are broken up into two subsections based on the location of the training sites; Perth/Fremantle metropolitan area; and the Waroona/Coolie District.

Perth/Fremantle
Students not local to the Perth region can consider a number of options:

•  Swan Inn — located 5 minutes from The Underwater Centre Fremantle, this hotel     accommodation offers bed and breakfast for $45.00 per night. Phone (08) 9335 2725.     [Please note that there are numerous other Pubs and Hotels in the Fremantle area with     accommodation prices similar to the Swan Inn. Please contact TUCF staff for a more     detailed list].

•  Fremantle Village — located 15 minutes from The Underwater Centre Fremantle, this     cabin style accommodation offers long term accommodation for small groups. Phone     (08) 9430 4866 or check out their website.

•  The Pirates Port City Backpackers — budget style backpacker accommodation from     $12.00 per night. Phone (08) 9335 6635 or e-mail.

•  YHA Backpackers Inn Freo — budget style backpacker accommodation from $130.00     per week. Phone (08) 9431 7065 or e-mail. [Please note that Fremantle offers a     variety of budget style youth hostels that can be used by students from overseas as     well as from Australia. For more details click here.]

Students will be expected to meet their own costs for accommodation during any training conducted in the Perth and Fremantle metropolitan areas. For more information on travel and accommodation options click here.

Waroona/Collie District

Waroona and Logue Brook dams in the Waroona District, or Lake Stockton in Collie, south of Perth, will be used for approximately two days in each course for deep diver training.

The dams have a caravan, camping ground and cabin accommodation as part of their supporting infrastructure. Lake Stockton has motel accommodation. Students and instructors will be accommodated in on site cabins at the dam. The site offers full amenities including laundries, kitchens, hot showers and toilets. For more information on Waroona click here.

The cost of meals and accommodation during training phases at either Logue Brook and Waroona Dams, or at Lake Stockton will be provided fully by The Underwater Centre Fremantle.

 Transport

Students are expected to make their own way to the course facilities at The Underwater Centre Fremantle in North Fremantle. Assistance can be given to students travelling to Waroona or Logue Brook Dams, however, there is the expectation that some students will use their own vehicles.

 Personal Items

It will be necessary to bring the following personal items to the course:

Work Clothing
Diving operations and preparations using heavy equipment and tools, outdoors, require appropriate working attire. Students will be required to bring with them, on each day of the course, the following personal items:

•  Boots - solid work boots are necessary to protect feet whilst working. Steel cap, non-
    slip boots are preferred.

•  Work clothes - sturdy cloths such as overalls or "King Gee" style trousers/shirts are
essential. Please note that work clothes must be clean and free of oils, grease, paints     etc. Working in compressed air environments and around oxygen in dirty clothes is an     explosive/fire hazard.

•  Hat - during the colder months a warm hat (beanie) is recommended, as is a hat for     sunny days.

•  Jacket - a warm waterproof jacket is essential.

•  Sunscreen.

•  Sunglasses.

•  Towel.

•  Bathers.

•  Small seamanship knife is recommended but not essential - this will be discussed     during the course.

Please remember that weather conditions can change quite rapidly on a dive site. It is best to be prepared.

Diving Equipment
All diving equipment is provided during the course. However, students may find the diving more comfortable if they provide their own personal diving equipment. These items include:

•  Wetsuit.
•  Booties.
•  Gloves.
•  Hood.
•  Weightbelt.
•  Knife.

And for Surface Supplied Divers (ADAS Part 2 and 3):

•  Divers Recovery Harness.
•  Divex Superlite 17B Hatliner.

Please note that this is only a recommendation, The Underwater Centre Fremantle does provide these items. However, divers should be aware, it is an expectation that they arrive at the workplace with, at a minimum, their own personal wetsuit and booties. In addition, many professional divers have their own diving harness, knife and Superlite 17B Hatliner. All of the above items can be purchased at TUCF.

At Waroona/Logue Brook Dam/ Lake Stockton
During the trips to Waroona or Logue Brook Dams, or Lake Stockton students will require, in addition to the items already outlined:

•  Sleeping bag/swag/bedding.
•  Personal Toiletries.
•  Towel.

Classroom
Students will require the following personal stationery items:

•  Pens.
•  Pencils.
•  Erasers.
•  Ruler.
•  Notebook/paper.
•  Medical dictionary - not essential.
•  Bag for carrying books.
•  Calculator.

 Immigration and Visas

Divers from overseas should apply for a Visitor Visa (study option) from their local Australian Consulate. These Visas enable visitors to study for up to 90 days which is more than enough time to complete all three ADAS courses with TUCF. For extended stays and working Visas contact an Australian Consulate for assistance.

•  General information on visas can be found at     http://www.immi.gov.au/allforms/pdf/48r.pdf

•  Information on Visitor Visas (Study Option) can be found at     http://www.immi.gov.au/allforms/pdf/999i.pdf

 Personal Medical Expenses

Students are responsible for their own medical expenses if they are injured or become ill for any reason during the duration of a course.

It is expected that overseas students will ensure their travel insurance covers any accident or health issue which may arise whilst in Australia. Local students must have a current Medicare card and/or relevant private health insurance.

In the event of an accident or ill health, students will be expected to contact their regular family medical practitioner. Overseas students and those students without a regular medical practitioner will be given the contact details for medical clinics within the nearby geographical area.

In the event of an emergency or diving related event, TUCF will facilitate urgent medical support through Fremantle hospital.
