The TUCF 2007/08 Safety Conference, held at Cable Beach Club Resort in    Broome on 7 and 8 January 2008, was declared a success by attendees.

Participants included all TUCF crew members, management, and Perth and Broome support staff, as well as INPEX senior management and QHSE staff. The Conference was also attended by scientists from RPS and URS, and air crew from Bristow Group and Broome Air Services, each of whom work directly with TUCF in the field.

The theme of the Conference, “Safety is Everybody’s Responsibility”, was embodied in guest speakers James Wood, who discussed “Choices and Consequences”, and Helen Fitzroy, whose moving topic “Just a Number” addressed the flow-on effects of accidents. Sure to be remembered long after the Conference, James and Helen ensured safety will remain the number one priority in every individual’s mind.

Keynote addresses from TUCF and INPEX management regarding various safety issues stimulated discussion in the smaller group breakout sessions. Various topics included “Incident Lessons Learnt” and ways to improve operations, leadership and teamwork, planning and communication, HR and IR issues, and a comprehensive HAZID review.

Managing Director, Ian Milliner, emphasised the significance of gathering all TUCF employees together – a rare occurrence given the remote locations where TUCF staff work. Taking advantage of the large, widespread team all being in the same place at the same time was enormously beneficial, with an open forum held. Feedback, issues raised, and Corrective Action Recommendations from the Conference are currently being examined.

The weekend before the Conference was occupied by a Senior First Aid course for TUCF Cultural Heritage Observers. A Masters Meeting for management and Heads of Departments and Vessels was held the day before the Conference. Employee Health and Safety Representatives also participated in an intensive safety workshop.

Mr Milliner declared an enormous “Bravo Zulu” to the entire team and congratulated the responsible attitudes of his safety-conscious staff. However, he maintained the importance of reminding every individual to always be aware of their individual safety and that of those around us – lessons we all learnt from the guest speakers.
